About Twin Lakes State Recreation Area

Twin Lakes State Recreation Area is located in Dixon County in northeastern Nebraska, near the Missouri River. The area is centered around two reservoirs formed by damming O'Neil Creek, known as North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake, which provide more than 1,600 surface acres of water. These lakes offer ideal settings for anglers targeting species like largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, and crappie. The landscape around the reservoirs features gently rolling hills, open prairie, and patches of woods, supporting a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous migratory birds. Visitors can enjoy a range of recreational opportunities, including boating with multiple boat ramps, picnicking at numerous sites, and birdwatching, particularly during spring and fall migrations. The area includes several developed campgrounds with amenities for tent and RV camping, and trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Twin Lakes is also a favored destination for winter sports such as ice fishing and snowmobiling when conditions allow. Historically, the area served agricultural and recreational uses before being developed as a state recreation area in the mid-20th century to preserve natural resources and provide public outdoor access. Its proximity to the Missouri River valley adds to the ecological diversity, while the relatively flat terrain makes it accessible to a broad range of visitors. The area’s mix of water and upland habitats creates an appealing natural retreat for families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quieter, less crowded experience compared to larger state parks.
